Air Traffic Safety
An editorial in today’s New York Times clearly highlights the tensions between parochial concerns and air passenger safety in the congressional bill reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration.
These safety reforms were thrust into the nation’s consciousness last February when Continental Flight 3407 en route to Buffalo, New York crashed, killing 50 people. The crash focused attention on the need for increased pilot training and regulation.
With the air passenger safety reforms hanging in the balance, the bill has been irresponsibly sidetracked by “the unrelated issue of unionization rules at the rival delivery companies, FedEx and United Parcel Service.”
