Aviation Liability: Experienced Aviation Accident Attorneys

Clifford Law Offices is a Chicago law firm that regularly handles complex damage cases, including claims for aviation accidents, wrongful death and personal injury arising out of transportation, medical negligence and product liability claims.

Robert A. Clifford, Kevin P. Durkin and other aviation attorneys at the aviation law firm have experience in commercial jet crashes both in the United States and abroad. Not only has the aviation law firm been involved in nearly every major commercial air crash disaster in America, the aviation lawyers at the firm have been involved in several major air crashes in foreign countries. Recently, Clifford Law Offices was retained by 17 families who lost loved ones or those who survived the crash of Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 on Feb. 25, 2009. The Boeing jet crashed into a muddy field two miles from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, killing nine and injuring 80 others.

Also, Robert Clifford has been appointed as the liaison counsel in the lawsuits involving the Cypriot jet that crashed in Greece last year killing 121 people aboard. Clifford serves as the spokesperson for all of the American families who lost loved ones when the Boeing 737-300 crashed into a hill near Athens after the pilots apparently fell unconscious following a drop in the cabin's pressure. The passengers included 48 students who were on a trip to Prague where the plane was due to fly after a stopover in Athens.

Boeing, based in Chicago, has been named as a defendant in a number of the lawsuits filed in the incident involving Helios Airways flight HCY 622 that left Larnaca Cyprus International Airport on Aug. 14, 2005. The complaints allege a number of design defects including a horn that sounds when a pressurization valve is incorrectly set. Apparently the same horn sounds with take-off problems which might have led to confusion by the pilots in the Greece air crash. Boeing has since revised its training manuals.

Clifford Law Offices represented the Woods family who lost their son when a Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway at Midway Airport, crashing into their car and injuring the other family members who witnessed the little boy's tragic death. That is the same type of plane that was involved in the terrible tragedy in Amsterdam in February, 2009, when a Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed in a muddy field that killed nine people including three employees of Boeing who were on that flight. Another Boeing employee was seriously injured along with more than 100 others who survived that terrible crash.

Clifford Law Offices’ aviation attorneys are available for consultation given their experience in crashes and accidents involving large commercial jets. Robert A. Clifford and Kevin Durkin served as lead counsel in the Roselawn, Indiana air crash of a turboprop plane where the inadequacy of the pneumatic de-icing boot was a major issue.  Kevin Durkin traveled to France where the de-icing boot was developed, to take the depositions of the engineers of the device.  After that crash, the design of the pneumatic de-icing boot was changed to make it more safe.

Our knowledgeable attorneys are experienced in air crash litigation around the world. The firm’s highly experienced trial attorneys have successfully represented passengers and crew members involving commercial aviation litigation as well as private aircraft, corporate jets and helicopter crashes. Mr. Clifford and his firm have brought lawsuits against a number of major airlines and aircraft manufacturers involved in these tragedies in the last 25 years.

Aviation liability is a highly complex area of law that requires in-depth knowledge of many facets of aviation. Robert Clifford, Kevin Durkin and Richard Burke have deposed literally hundreds of experts and top executives at aviation firms around the world in preparation for trial. The firm, in fact, hires experts from around the globe to help in its trial preparation work. Timothy Tomasik, partner at Clifford Law Offices, also is very active in this complex area of law. In addition to working round-the-clock on the World Trade Center property damage litigation surrounding the tragic 9/11 air crashes, he is handling the case involving the crash of the private jet that killed the younger son of NBC Sports Chairman, Dick Ebersol. A chartered Challenger jet crashed moments after take-off in November, 2004. His elder son dragged his dad out of the fiery plane. Initial National Transportation Safety Board reports indicated the plane's wings were not de-iced in the freezing weather.
