NTSB Hearings Conclude on Crash of Flight 3407

Press Release, 05/14/2009

In the final hours of testimony of the National Transportation Safety Board (NT SB) hearings, three Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) representatives spoke.about the crash of Flight 3407.

The FAA representatives testified that pilots are trained on approaches to stalls, but stalls and recoveries from stalls are not performed during pilot training.  The pilots of Continental Connection Flight 3407 experienced a stall and failed to apply the correct stall recovery procedures, leading to the crash, according to evidence presented at the NTSB hearings.

Those who testified in the afternoon are Dick Clarke and Dan Jenkins, of the Airline Flight Service division, and John A. Ryan, Program Manager of Pilot Records Improvement Act (PRIA).  Other issues of interest that were raised this afternoon include:

*the FAA is considering the development of Operational Directives, or OD’s, for airlines, which would be similar to Airworthiness Directives for aircraft, and would be used to take emergency corrective actions on airlines if safety problems are found.

*the FAA is looking at ways to improve the speed of its responsiveness to NTSB safety recommendations.

The NTSB has concluded its public investigatory process and is expected to review all of the pertinent materials and issue recommendations regarding the crash of Flight 3407 in six to 12 months.
