Robert Clifford Reacts To Testimony at NTSB Hearing

Press Release, 05/12/2009

Robert A. Clifford, attorney for some of the families who lost loved ones aboard the tragic crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407, reacts to the testimony at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearings this afternoon.

*Colgan Air officials admit the crew of Flight 3407 made mistakes.  Colgan officials admitted that prior to the crash of Flight 3407 its stall training program did not include training with the “VREF INCR” switch set to the “INCR” position, which means that its pilots were not accustomed to experiencing stalls at higher air speeds associated with operation in icing conditions.  Further, this training deficiency made it less likely for Colgan pilots to remember that they should increase their minimum airspeed when operating in icing conditions, whi ch is one of the flight crew failures that led to this crash.

*Bombardier officials admitted that the Dash 8 Q400 aircraft will allow pilots to enter minimum airspeeds for flight in dry conditions into its flight management system even though the plane is operating in icing conditions with its ice protection systems activated, which can have catastrophic consequences as evidenced by this crash.
